A secret job in Mutalan Koulu, Finland

We 4 th grade students. We are 10 years old. We have made periscopes.

Sami is nailing his periscope.

Inside the periscope there are two mirrors.

Girls are painting their periscopes.

And boys are waiting for their turn to paint.

Some boys are looking behind the door what is happening in the 3 rd classroom.

Juha is researching what is happening in the next classroom.

1 st grade (the youngest in the school) are learning Finish ;-).

Your periscopes look like great fun. How long did they take you to make?
We don't have they type of woodwork equipment that you do. We have to wait until we are in Secondary school before we can do the type of projects you have done with the periscopes and board games. Do you have a special teacher for woodwork, or is it your class teacher who does this with you?

Hello! It took about 6 hours to make these periscopes. We do this kind work from beking of the school. But more from 3 rd grade. In our school class teacher is teaching. And it is Ari ;-). I have 8 ours a week these lessons to different pupils.

Hello,
Are your 1st grade children 5 and 6years old like in the UK?
How do they learn Finnish? In the UK we have something called ERR where each each day the children revisit the letter sounds and different spelling combinations and build up their knowledge of the language by practise 'little and often'.
Thanks Mrs Bowley

Hello!
Our 1st grade children are 6 or 7 years old. Children in Fin start their 1 st grade at same year, when they will be 7 to the end of the year. So they can be 6 or 7.
They learn to read and write using same kind of metod like you do in UK (I heard in Springfield Primary school when I was there ;-)). One letter sounds different than the name of letter is. Then they collect sounds together and then first try to say bytes and then little by little collects bytes getting words.
Thank you from your interest. Ari
